All the famous ones from Bach to Gershwin- presented chronologically. In the sketches there are many childhood anecdotes such as the time when Haydn cutt off a fellow choir boy's pigtail in Vienna's St. Stephen's church; or the young Greig's decision to go to Leipzig at the persuasion of Ole Bull. For the rest, the chapters are mainly a quick reporting of life events, but there is the occasional, if sketchy, bit of analysis-for instance of Debussy's ""dreamlike"" impressionistic music and his break from the powerfully emotional romantics. A nice but relatively unexciting gift encyclopedia for the young music student or recital prize winner. Virginia Grilley has done a black and white drawing of each composer.
