1854-1858 in California for the adventures of Ezra Tracy and his friend, Harry Thurston, in their search for gold. As clerk in his mother's Argonaut House, Ezra Stumbles on the information of gold to be had from the sand on the redwood coast, persuades Harry to join him in the hunt. Afoul of Australian criminals, running the dangers of the lawless times, the wilderness, and the hardships of the weather, Ezra and Harry strenuously pursue their objective, are forced to hide their treasure against a possible return. Return they do and encounter more perils, only to lose the gold because of a pigheaded donkey. Found again, the gold brings them local prestige as well as wealth. Filled with actual references to events of the period, this combines a complicated amount of financial dealings with some vigorous, if sometimes endless, adventuring. Our heroes have definitely 19th century qualities and are an unbeatable pair in perseverance and know-how. A solider book than most of this type.
