Al Toombs returns from the war to undertake alone the raising of his three children, in a somewhat unsteady cottage in Maryland. He found what it meant to put in a 140 hour week of laundry, cleaning, and the ordeal of meals, which he gradually upgraded from frankfurters to chicken. Larry was 10, Lynn 7, Janie 4- and he tried various systems of harnessing his child-power with no success; he spent a winter in Florida to escape the truant officers, he went through various vicissitudes, many headaches, full quota of stomachaches. Fairly funny recall, in the Cheaper by the Dozen tradition.
