William Randolph Hearst, one of her favorite fellow socialites, took a chance on Cissy Patterson (one of the Chicago Trib's Patterson/McCormick tribe) and let her try her daffy, dilettante hand at editing his capitol moneyloser, The Washington Times Herald. By being incomparably herself and ferociously competitive, Cissy made the paper pay. Later, she bought it. She once described herself as ""...a rich, slightly nasty child,"" and when she grew up she didn't change much. She lived from the 1880's to WWII, always with money for whims and always at the top of the social ladder. She was a darned interesting neurotic with printer's ink for blood and when they made Cissy, they broke the diamond studded mold.
