AMERICAN INDIAN MYTHOLOGY

Author of both juvenile and adult books on Indian culture and lore, Alice Marriot here joins forces with Carol Rachlin, anthropologist, to produce a pleasant and instructive book of myths and legends from American Indian tribes. Most of the material presented here was gathered by interviewing in ""hospital wards, beside country kitchen wood stoves, in the swamps. . . , in our own living rooms, and at powwows."" As told by descendants of the original Americans, these tales reveal often similar themes and archetypal heroes and characters. The adaptations are smooth and skillful--the stories are timelessly appealing. Introduced by a brief history of Indian migration and a guide to the myths, this is a worthy and respectable addition to Indian studies, as well as pleasant, exotic reading for the casual observer of Indian culture.
