This should be subtitled ""The Story of the Red Cross"" rather than ""The Story of Human Service"", for that is what it is, from it inception by Henri Dunant to the early participation in the war today. Back in 1862, Dunant, shocked by the tragedy of human suffering at Solferino, organized a band of volunteers to tend the wounded behind the lines in Castigilone. From this beginning came the vast international organization of the Red Cross. Its service to humanity, not in war alone, but in famine, fire, flood, earthquake, disasters the world over. Something of the personalities, -- Clara Barton, Mabel Boardman, Lilliam Wald, etc. Then the Junior Red Cross and its contribution. A useful reference book, but too objective and impersonal for general popularity. Too bad -- there is so much that could have made it that.
