THE TRIAL OF OLIVER PLUNKETT

Resurrecting the case of Archbishop Plunkett of Ireland who was tried for treason, found guilty and beheaded in London in 1681, the author has had access to material which tells the story of this famous trial from the Irish and, of course, from the Catholic point of view. Told in great detail, the story of Plunkett's trial will be of interest primarily to historians. It represents another attempt to give to an historical event a different interpretation than that given in many history books, an interpretation which represents the Catholic view-point. In her introductory note, the author finds a parallel between the trial of Archbishop Plunkett and that of Cardinal Mindsenty in Hungary. This reference to contemporaneous events will not suffice, however, to make this a book of broad general appeal. It is a specialized book for those interested in the history of Catholicism, particularly in England.
