MARTHA WASHINGTON by Alice Curtis Desmond

MARTHA WASHINGTON

By

Publisher: Dodd, Mead

A biography of the wife of our first president, showing her as a sensible unpretentious person from the time of her first ball in Williamsburg her early marriage to Daniel Custis, her management of the great plantation after his death. Then her marriage to George Washington and we see her aiding and abetting him at every point of his career, we see her profound love, her sorrow in the loss of her daughter and later her son at Yorktown, her reluctance to enter public life as first lady, her joy in their return to Mt. Vernon. A very real picture in which details of the life of the time give it almost a fictional character. A vivid personal portrait and a warm human story.
