CAJUN COLUMBUS

In dialect as thick as Rice's unimaginative illustrations are thin, Durio goes on about one Pierre Lastrapes, Cajun, who used to laissez de bon temps rouler down by Pont Breaux with his frien' dem Viking, till he fell asleep drunk in a boat and ended up in Spaniel country, chatting with Columbus about whether the earth is round or shaped like a big boudin (there are footnote translations,'this one explaining that a boudin is a sausage). Before you can say Jack Robichaux (her line), Pierre becomes ol' Chris' navi-alligator and together they cross the big Atlantic Bayou for Spaniel King and Queen Ferdinand and Isabella. Despite the purported success of the Cajun Night Before Christmas (1973), there's more baloney than boudin here I 'ope to tole you.
