A collection of successful projects -- in the United States essentially but with cases from all over the world -- to preserve and better natural surroundings, points up the need to ""save the countryside"". From national parks to keeping billboards off the roadsides, this goes on to show how gardens and sanctuaries, recreation areas, forests, soil, and water, have been maintained by small groups, communities, industry, sportsmen and local government through educational programs, united action, publicity and radio programs. The case histories range from the redwoods and prairie dogs to churches and cemeteries, from slum improvement to town beautification, and the procedures for such accomplishments are detailed in a last section. A work book for enterprising garden clubs, civic-minded citizens and youth groups, this should be a helpful, hopeful guide.
