THE BIG TREASURE BOOK OF MOTHER GOOSE

Newness is no asset in Mother Goose, unless in either format or illustrator there is something special to talk about. In this case, the collection scarcely warrants the term ""big""- for only about 70 verses are included, and those too too obvious. In format, it is perishable, lightly stitched, inadequately reenforced; the laminated cover will stand up against dirt. Illustrations are pleasantly conventional, in the somewhat Teutonic school, colorful and plentiful, but uninspired. Layout and typography good. Compared with the Random House, Simon & Schuster, Warne (Kate Greenaway at $1.25), this adds nothing. And of the old standbys, an investment of $2.50 in the perennial Blanche Fisher Wright (Rand McNally) pays dividends.
