SIR WILLIAM PHIPS -- Treasure-Fisherman and Governor by Alice Lounsberry

SIR WILLIAM PHIPS -- Treasure-Fisherman and Governor

By

Publisher: Scribner

The biography of one of America's first self-made men, a ship carpenter who rose to be governor of Massachusetts. Rough, shrewd, generous, he pulled himself up by his own bootstraps. A marriage to a wealthy widow, success in a project of raising a unken Spanish galleon, various adventures in French and Indian wars, a stormy gubernatorial career, during which he quelled the witchcraft epidemic. Good historical and period reconstruction, but a subject of limited appeal.
