THE PEREGRINE FALCONS

With Alice Schick's soaring description of Zeus and Artemis, two of the last peregrines ever observed nesting on the Hudson River's Palisade cliffs--and with drawings by Peter Parnall to come--this is a more stylish telling of the peregrine rescue story found in Kaufmann and Meng's Falcons Return (KR, p. 518, J-178). Although Schick consulted with Dr. Tom Cade, a leader of the project, and observed his work at Comell's ornithology laboratory, we found the earlier account, which described step-by-step Meng's backyard research, more satisfying. On balance, this sleeker, swifter version may win new friends for the peregrines among soft core nature lovers, while those who want to see animal behavior close up will prefer Falcons Return.
