PEDRO

Bound for San Augustin, the Spanish ship Estrella is destroyed by hurricane and and his sister Maria are miraculously washed ashore. The children are taken in by the kind Spaniards of the New World, but Pedro is impatient to know whether his father is still alive. On a precarious journey to northern Florida, Pedro and Maria are captured by the Yemassee Indians who are holding father captive as well. Father remembers nothing of his past life and only when he is clubbed by a raiding band of Apalaches, does his memory return. As prisoners of the Apalaches, the three are doomed, until Pedro evolves an ingenious plan of escape. Not only is he responsible for his own family, but also for paving the way for a peace settlement between the and the Spanish settlers. There is an unreal quality to this story of Florida. Pedro and Maria are not convincing, nor are the and langers they encounter in their search.
