JOSEPH CORNELL: SECRETS IN A BOX

by Alison Baverstock

Pub Date: Dec. 1st, 2003
ISBN: 3-7913-2928-6

This entry in the Adventures in Art series focuses its attention on a lesser-known artist whose work includes collages and wooden boxes filled with arranged objects. It continues the format of incorporating biographical information with informative interpretation of the artist’s creations. All this is accompanied by clear, detailed reproductions of the works and arranged with interesting, visually stimulating graphics. It’s Cornell’s unique art that sets this one apart. Baverstock explains a great deal, but stresses that many of his works evoke a sense of mystery concerning the choice of objects and their juxtaposition. Readers are also given a guide to the best way to examine Cornell’s work, as well as instructions for creating their own boxes. An excellent introduction to a different art form. (Nonfiction. 8-12)
