MY BROTHER, THE STAR

Fifth-grader Leslie, who was named for Leslie Howard by his mother, is not the one who makes her dreams of being a stage mother come true. That role is left to little brother Cameron, whose undeniable cuteness and favored status have given Leslie an exaggerated case of sibling rivalry--which is reduced to normal animosity (mixed with fraternal affection) as Leslie comes to realize how much Cam detests acting in mindless commercials that make him seem younger than he is. Meanwhile, Leslie wins a coveted spot in a summer basketball camp; learns the value of an old friend; and makes a new one (a short girl basketball player named Bobby, which at one point causes an amusing confusion with their names and sexes). As a result, Leslie is more sure of his own place in the world and in his family, and even becomes Cam's ally in getting Mom to agree to let Cam give up his premature career. This first novel by a California children's librarian presents believable kids in funny, realistic interaction that is sure to appeal; the brothers' changing relationship is especially well drawn. Hearn's full-page b&w illustrations bring out the kids-next-door flavor and the humor.
