RIVER SONG by Alison Morgan

Anthropomorphized birds inhabit Alison Morgan's winter countryside in quite a departure for the author of A Boy Called Fish (1973), Pete (1973), and Ruth Crane (1974). Timothy, a pied wagtail, Richard, a wren, and Tyce, a flycatcher and poet, are the primary characters, though others, notably a fanciful goldfinch named Julian, flit through. In fact, the birds develop distinct personalities which do not seem too incongruous with their avian natures; nevertheless, there is a certain cuteness underlying some of the minimal action which soon begins to cloy.
