A quietly pleasant English story, in which past and present become entangled, when Penelope goes to visit her aunt at Thackers, scene of history revolving around Anthony Babington and Mary Queen of Scots. In the present, Penelope fears that she may be trapped by the past, as she comes to know a brave company of shadows; in the past her foreknowledge of the failure of the plot and Anthony's death, often make her suspect. Little substantial plot, but good minuiae of times and customs. The publishers link her with Elizabeth Goudge. We don't think so.
