The editor's purpose, which he has successfully carried out, is to show the vitality evident in the breadth and incredible variety of contemporary American art. In a fascinating layout (there is a full page color print for each artist; the plate folds back to reveal several black and white reproductions and a photograph of the artist) Mr. Weller presents a sampling of the works of 102 artists. His notes- biographical and critical-- indicate careful research and insight. The two volume set, which is an unusual survey, will make a fine addition to libraries or a well chosen gift for art students and art enthusiasts.
