A knight is turned into a beautiful woman in love with his own faithful squire in Church’s fantasy novel.
Ka-Ron of Teal is the bravest knight in the kingdom of Idoshia. He’s a perfect specimen of masculinity, so muscular that he has to have special armor made to fit his figure. He is unwilling to dedicate himself to one woman, even his childhood sweetheart, Kym. After Kym takes her own life in an act of heartbroken hysteria, her mother, the Wicca Master Kai, puts a curse on Ka-Ron, turning him into a woman. “The reflection looking back at the knight was not that of his own,” realizes the knight upon seeing himself in the mirror. “Blonde; shoulder-length hair, full lips, emerald-green eyes, fair skin, childbearing hips of the most seductive and luxurious breasts…” What’s more, the curse has made Ka-Ron exceptionally desirous of her loyal squire, Jatel, whose ordinary looks and shy personality have made him unlucky with women. After immediately—if awkwardly—consummating their physical yearnings, the two set off to reverse the curse, a hazardous quest that will require them to confront a horde of vampires, an elven power struggle occasioned by an interracial relationship with a dwarf, and the complicated romantic feelings shared by the knight and her squire. Ka-Ron soon starts to wonder: Even if she can convince Kai to change her back to a man, would she really want to switch back? Church writes with a buoyant, humorous tone attuned to Ka-Ron’s new experiences of the world. Here, the knight finds herself suddenly (and supernaturally) six months pregnant: “She felt the little kicking and subtle movement of the being growing inside her, and it was wondrous! There was a joy inside her that felt right, intimate, and godly. She was becoming a... mother. To the knight’s surprise, she...was...enjoying it.” Readers will enjoy the novel’s lighthearted exploration of sexual and gender identity within the familiar tropes of the fantasy genre.
A bold, madcap fantasy yarn about a gender-switched knight errant.
