MAKE FRIENDS OF TREES AND SHRUBS

This is a unique approach to our familiar- and unfamiliar-trees and shrubs,- not a botanical study (though it contains a good deal of botany for the interested), not a landscape designer aid. Rather it is a charming -- almost a dedicated- approach to just what the title says, ""making friends of trees and shrubs"". Mrs. Guillet knows intimately the 500 species to be found in New York's Central Park and has used this as a basis for describing them, grouping them in families for telling the legends about them, and for her enchanting pen drawings, meticulous botanical illustrations that provide the observer with details of growth, bark, trunk and branches, buds, flowers and fruits. A zone map relates the species she has selected to other parts of the country. And for the New York residents and visitors- she has provided a fascinating history of the Park, and a running description of the different sections and what one finds there. In preparation is a guide to Central Park which approaches this phase specifically, so this section should stimulate anticipation for the coming text. An index, a glossary, and so on, make this a practical guide.
