A fault line reveals instability in the earth's rock strata and earthquakes may ensue which, combined with the thermonuclear explosions that now take place, result in total eco-catastrophe. Various people try to deal with the disaster area the U.S. has become -- Sophocles Spiros, the presidential adviser, and not as bad as he sounds; Jake Lambert, a volcanologist, who really wants to stay out of politics but will be drawn into them; Abby, the militant girl he's loved for eight years; etc. etc. This belongs in the category of boom-doom novels Fletcher Knebel initiated -- it serves the same purpose and should satisfy the same market.
