Latest in a series that includes The Proper Bostonians, The Romantic New Orleanians, etc., this takes a long look at the Queen City of the Ohio, where an almost European awareness of the past produces a ""dynamic serenity"" unique in its cosmopolitanism among American cities. The great love and appreciation of music makes it a contender for the title of the ""new Vienna"". As with the others of the series, this is gossip-column-deep in local society and personalities. The rest of the story-from the coming of the first whites to the frontier wilderness on the north bank of the Ohio, through the bawdy mushrooming days of the late 19th century, on to the progressive present with its model city government, this parallels in many details the story of the average burgeoning American city. The research is unimpeachable; but the style lacks the verve of some of the others. Interest, inevitably, will be liveliest in the region of Cincinnati.
