SO YOU THINK YOU'RE FAT?

In the authors' usual thorough style, an encyclopedic look at weight and weight troubles. Most unusual here is the emphasis on neurobiology: understanding the body in terms of endorphins and neurotransmitters like serotonin; how set point theory brings us back to a particular weight; the role of an impaired body image. The usual diet strategies are rehearsed with originality: writing down what you eat is old hat; ``red-circle slip-ups'' is not. The up-to-date chapters on anorexia and bulimia should elicit healthy self-appraisal. The candor here is sure to be helpful. From viewing many weight-loss programs as ``glorified grocery stores'' to giving the lowdown on today's up-and-coming pills (e.g. Prozac), this has an air of authority that young people will respect, appreciate, and even, perhaps, heed. Index. (Nonfiction. 12+)
