The Silversteins apply their well-known thoroughness and scientific approach to one of today's most difficult subjects. With a foreword from Dr. Paul Volbering, director of a leading AIDS treatment center, and review and approval from staff at the Center for Disease Contol, the thrust is toward supplying information about the disease's transmission process. Whereas the recently published AIDS: What Does It Mean to You? (p. 1211) stressed recent research and human concerns, this is more technically difficult, a tell-it-like-it-is detective story about tracking a killer. Greater sexual knowledge is also assumed. Facts and myths are reviewed, as are diagnosis, treatment, and dilemmas such as school attendance and societal reaction. Also highly useful: unusual precautionary information, e.g., checking sterilization of earpiercing needles. This hard look at AIDS evokes both depression and optimism. Sure to be consulted frequently for facts, guidance, and reassurance.
