The original manuscript of the earliest known Canadian picture book, dating from 1859, is here reproduced and published for the first time. Delicate drawings in black-and-white and elaborate initial letters in bright plum accompany a set of verses beginning ""A was an Archer and shot at a Frog"" and proceeding through such specimens as ""E was an Esquire, with pride on his Brow,... V was a Vintner, a very great Sot."" The style and the frame of reference make this of interest primarily to collectors of juvenilia, for whom a brief account of its history and a biography of its creator is appended to the text.
