This is patently a text book, elevated to a possible general market. Its format (with exercises, questions, reading suggestions, etc. at the end of each section) indicate as much. The tone of the writing is a trifle pedantic, with a tendency to talk down from the teacher's desk. And yet, in clear-cut form, the history of this country is told, not chronologically, but in terms of movements, trends, characteristic events of successive periods, so that one sees U. S. history as a social document. Very little opportunity taken for interpretation.
