A psychiatrist (who incidentally does not use psychiatry in his therapy) writes of the many fear neuroses which are so prevalent in the world today. For the layman, not the professional, since the handling of the subject is popular and highly simplified. The various phobias which affect both mind and body are very easily explained away by Dr. Cowles, too easily for the objective reader, it seems to me. He claims that they originate through fatigue, the depletion of energy of the nerve cells, then work down through the nervous system to mind and body. The cure is twofold,- medical sedative-stimulant and mental suggestion, along the lines of Charcot. Though Cowles has a good medical standing, a book like this does seem to smack of the quack.
