Life of an American painter. He was a simple, rugged honest man, but there was little of drama in his life -- and the writer has not succeeded in making it interesting reading. Kane was born in Scotland, worked early in the mines, then in a candle factory. At 19 he came to America and for years did hard manual labor, until an accident which cost him his leg, turned him to painting. Railroad car painting, house painting -- it was the use of paints that fascinated him. And he went in for landscapes on the side. Recognition came slowly, in spite of several prizes and a one man show, and he died in poverty. A strange segment of American life, which should be more interesting.
