STRATEGY FOR LABOR

French Marxist Gorz presents the need for an alternate, democratic model a functioning, servicing society, as opposed to the capitalist consumer world he sees as fast encroaching upon the European scene. The labor movement is the key to producing this alternative, Gorz argues. Now that labor receives adequate pay and men are still bound by the chains of monopoly capital, it must realize that the objects of production, what is produced and the quality of the society as a whole are the next questions on the agenda. His strategy is for labor to shift from emphasizing unrealizable overall changes and concentrate on reforming its own immediate situation. His argument will be a familiar one to scholars following the evolution of post-Marxian European politics; to the layman, the book will represent a striking point of divergence from what he knows about Left-wing methods. Paradoxically, the text is written for the strategist only, and not his battalions of working men.
