THE FORMS OF MUSIC by Andre Hodier

THE FORMS OF MUSIC

By

Publisher: Walker

Essentially this is a specialized dictionary of music, in which form is the substance. The author, after defining genre, style, form (""the means through which a composition strives to achieve unity"") and structure, moves from air de cour to villancico with better known forms such as sonata and symphony also in evidence. He defines each one, gives its history, describes its structure. The coverage is brief but sure, and approachable for the uniformed.
