The author of America Comes of Age, etc. does a thoroughgoing survey of the Mediterranean area, its people, its civilization, highly readable in parts, heavy and technical in others. His purpose seems to be to indicate the importance of the Mediterranean, but recognizes its losses with the shift to the west, and intimates that this more materialistic civilization may cause much trouble, and that the values of the Mediterranean civilization might still save the world. This might be a defense mechanism, viewed psychologically. But unquestionably, the Mediterranean is still an area vital to world balance. Prestige value of Siegfried name.
