ENZO FERRARI MUSEUM

A fly-on-the-wall—if not flying-down-the-track—virtual visit to one of Italian motordom’s principal shrines.
If you are a motorhead of a certain bent, then a visit to Modena, Italy, is on your bucket list. If you can’t afford the airfare, much less the cost of a 1972 Ferrari 312 B2 (its chassis “semi-monocoque with riveted aluminum panels,” its front-to-rear suspension “independent, deformable four-side,” and its price tag beyond the reach of those who have to ask), then this interactive e-book may satisfy some of the itch. The hallmark is a panoramic view of the museum’s show floor, with well-annotated entries on each of the dozen or so formula racing vehicles housed there. The book’s information panels don’t always seem intuitively laid out, but it’s worth exploring them to get at nuggets such as a fine, small but circumstantial biography of Enzo Ferrari (1898-1988), to whose memory the museum is dedicated while also serving as “an international cultural and tourist pole.” Certainly the Ferrari Museum has been drawing crowds since it opened in 2012 and reopened in 2014 under the aegis of the Ferrari company itself (rather than the city government). The book is easily navigated and is thoroughly well-designed and -illustrated—and, as it happens, a bargain compared to the entrance fee for the museum itself, weighing in at about one-tenth the cost (excluding airfare).
