THE FORTUNES OF WAR

A blend of text and photographs, which brings to the front the invasion of Tarawa, the siege of Stalingrad, the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Taken together they summarize the nature of World War II. The book arrived too late for full report, so briefly here are the facts. The text is based on four half hour TV programs done for CBS News series, The 20th Century. Enormous research went into preparation for this program, plus a vast choice of photographs. The editing job has synthesized the mass into a coordinate whole with great impact. One could wish the reproduction of the memorable photographs could have been sharper, for their content is superb.
