The '40's is Bergman's beat (The Big Kiss-Off of 1944), again with private dick Jack LeVine, hired by his old CCNY classmate, a screenwriter Walter Adrian, to case Hollywood for a clue to Adrian's studio blacklisting. But Adrian is hung high on a Western lot and an actor is wiped out before LeVine eavesdrops on Congressman R. M. Nixon shilling for HUAC, and is off on a shooting chase chauffeured by Bogey. A Commie-hunt name game attired in a classy fedora and brassy patter.
