The murder of a London artist keeps Chief Insp. Grant swerving between his two heirs apparent and his housekeeper who claims he was to have married her. An alibi, a hoax, and a broken picture frame which suggests another kind all lead to considerable speculation, recapitulation and reconstruction on the part of Grant. A novel of detection rather than action, which some of his readers may miss.
