KIRKUS REVIEW

The assault by gentle, elderly, eccentric Edward Latimer on a young girl in a train compartment on a rural road known as the Cuckoo Line, is not prosecuted, but while untenably out of character, leads to his vilification by the villagers, and the later murder of the questionable young woman turns up some circumstantial evidence which will convict Latimer. His sons, and prospective daughter-in-law, scent the possibility of a frame, find their murderer who is unfortunately killed before they can present their case, and are finally forced to reenact the supposed seduction in order to win the confidence of the prosecutor... A highly original course of procedure, equably pursued.
