The text has all been taken from Andy Adams' Log of a Cowboy, which was first published in 1903 and has reappeared in more recent editions. Andy Adams was a genuine cowboy, and the excerpts included here deal with his experiences on a cattle drive in 1882 from Taxas to Montana. In contrast to the modern, stark image of the cowboy, the style may seem somewhat elaborate and old-fashioned. But the first hand details of the Old West have a reality that is never recaptured in reconstructions. The book is fascinating Americana and exciting adventure. The sketchy drawings are amusing and a pleasant complement to the text.
