Aside from some informational tidbite about French Canada (which makes for trying reading in their enthusiastic attempts at local color) and some French words interpreted, this book offers nothing. The characters remain shells, the dialogue is strained and there is no substance to the plot: Boy turns up on farm; is taken in loves homing pigeons; is afraid of gallant Royal Canadian Mountie; works on farms goes on trips; is suspected of being home part of River Pirate; family believes in him; runs away leaving apologetic noto; lost and found; is escapee from Orphanage (Monsleur PaPa knew all the time).
