THE MEN

This life which is an open book is actually more of a libretto since there is very little development of either the background, Bulgaria during the war and Germany after, or those involved. The story itself is attached to The Men who provide half German, half, Jewish Eveline's Life Experience -- i.e. The Brothers, Boris and Boyan when she is 14; The Suitors, two British young men; The Seducer, a suave American; The Husband, also an American, of whom she tires; The Father, hers, who had abandoned her years before; The Rivals and The Artist, lovers; and finally The Father of the Son she bears... As for The Girl who becomes A Woman, Eveline is never much more than a rather captious, self-centered piece, and even if her story has a few autobiographical fingerprints, it isn't very interesting.
