THE TIMID SHEEP

Lollipop, a Dorset sheep, was born with a bad case of nerves. She couldn't bear the company of the flock and sought out corners of the barn for herself or went out only when the others came in. Somehow, it's as sad as the thought of a highschool girl eating alone in the corner of the cafeteria. Miss Hess and her camera follow Lollipop through her lonely lamb days to the sheep auction where her farmer tried to get rid of her. Lollipop got away and lived alone for a long time in the woods where she gave birth to a ram. Mother and son finally join a pair of pet sheep and it all makes for a book that is simple, satisfying non-fiction just as the author's Shetland Ponies and Rabbits in the Meadow are. There is a lot of basic information on the operation of a sheep farm--shearing, grading and selling. And the large, clear photograph per page makes it a visual story as well.
