Kidogo, a young elephant, is convinced that he is the smallest creature on the Earth and decides to go on a quest to find someone “who was just as small as he.” Through the woodlands, along the river, across the plains he looks. Finally, he stops, deciding that he will just have to do everything for himself. As he gives himself a dust bath, he feels an itching and tickling that will not go away. He is surrounded by creatures much smaller than he is: ants. As he helps the tiny ants, he realizes that he is just the right size “for a little elephant.” Soft watercolor illustrations, while true to the African landscapes, seem washed out and too muted. A charming tale celebrating the unique position of all things, this is sweet, but not a necessary purchase. (Picture book. 3-7)
