WOMEN IN TELEVISION

Mostly unedited shop talk from women in all phases of television, including Joan Ganz Cooney, President of the Children's Television Workshop, Jessica Savitch, local ""anchorperson"" and the makeup and prop technician on the Mike Douglas show as well as film editors, directors, an engineer and an account executive who work for local stations, primarily in Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The womens' descriptions of their jobs are often couched in jargon that can be hard to penetrate, but by the time they get to talking, one by one, about how they broke into the field and its disadvantages (mostly one-day honeymoons and eight-day weeks) one gets a kind of consensus that no carefully rephrased handbook could deliver. The text, like the TV business, will reward those who show persistence and initiative.
