THE SEA ROCK

Emily, who's jealous, suspects that the babysitter hired to watch little brother Billy at the shore is a sweet-talking phoney, and she's right: the girl lies and steals and finally neglects Billy so seriously that he almost drowns. Why? Emily asks. ""It would be so nice if we always knew what made people act the way they do,"" sighs Emily's mother, pointing up the pointlessness of the story.
