The fortune -- and misfortunes -- of the two children of a Russian aristocratic family before, during and after the revolution provide a good bit of material, but that is about all that gives substance to a would-be panoramic novel in which the ups and downs of the individuals, pattern the social and economic changes of the Soviet upheaval. Robot characterization -- a plot verging on the ludicrous -- pass it up.
