Excellent career information briefly put and a general history of the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior. Among the most taken for granted of national treasures, our park system employs hundreds of specialized personnel. The uniformed rangers are perhaps the best known to the public and receive the most publicity due to the headline rescue efforts they are called upon to make for unwise tourists and campers. These stories supply anecdotal energy to a book which is mostly job description. The need for park-based naturalists and historians and what it is they do are clearly outlined. There is a short survey of national park management in foreign countries as well.
