Clara Humble and her best friend, Bradley, follow a well-worn rite of passage and walk to the park by themselves when Bradley turns 10.

Except…they don’t quite make it all the way to the park. On the way, they discover a cat hiding in a churchyard. And the next day, they discover the cat has had kittens. And that’s when they realize—this feline family needs them! Clara and Bradley and their frenemy, Shane, begin their campaign to convince their parents to let them keep the cats while doing whatever necessary to ensure the cats’ survival. To finance their mission, Clara embarks on a new movie starring the kitties and, of course, her famous superhero character, @Cat. Humphrey returns to a character that leaps off the page with enthusiasm and spark in her third outing. (Naming conventions in previous books in the series point to some diversity among Clara’s classmates, but Clara appears to be white.) This one matches her previous books in terms of wit and hijinks, offering up jokes mixed with more serious challenges. The resolution of these latter, which include an extended lie to parents about going to the park, feels somewhat rushed as the book focuses on positive outcomes of the kids’ deceit.

A fun, funny, and friendly episode in the saga of the indomitable Clara Humble
