LAUGHING GULLS

For those readers delighted by the antics of the author's The Horse Marines, this is another book in which the river, the bay and boats act as a catalyst in the lives of a group of energetic children. In this case, the children, mainly natives and an occasional summer resident of good faith, conflict with the yacht club set. The society racers deplore the crafts of the local children and refuse to allow them either on their beach or in their water. A race involving five sneakboxes and an outrigger canoe settles the issue in a summer rich with human and nautical issues. Anna Rose Wright conjures up unusual but believable children and provides them with a bright background.
