Many diverse subjects are skilfully and sensitively dealt with in this book. It is the story of Mormons, their enforced exodus from Illinois is 1846, and their westward quest for the land of milk and honey. It is the story of 15-year-old Corey and her growing affection for Ethan, the boy her father has pledged her to marry. It is the story of Ethan, whose independent nature will not allow him to subscribe to the tenets of a church that prohibits the practice of medicine and the freedom of choice. Each element of the story has a special tenderness about it -- especially the Corey-Ethan relationship which begins as resentment and grows, with understanding, to love. A well-written, many-faceted book.
