This is the first of a series of ""Victorian romances"" about another not so ""new governess"" who arrives at the Dower House of Lady Mellowes although her charge is older than usual, seventeen-year-old (A)Dorabella. Before very long our Miss Jane Bird--that is her name--becomes our radiant dove and in all the cooing and billing and assorted activities (balls, dinners, readings, horseback rides) a story is difficult to discern except that the very ""compelling"" Mr. Havering proposes. . . . But yikes, the pitter patter of idle chatter and empty matter.
